Fri Jan 03 06:18:05 UTC 2025: ## India Faces Mounting Pressure on Day 1 of Sydney Test

**Sydney, Australia:** India’s hopes of salvaging the Border-Gavaskar Trophy suffered a significant blow on the first day of the inconsequential fifth Test against Australia in Sydney. Despite winning the toss and electing to bat, India ended the day on a precarious 168/9, facing a substantial deficit.

The Indian innings was characterized by a frustrating combination of shaky batting and shrewd Australian bowling. The top order crumbled early, with KL Rahul (4) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) falling cheaply. While Shubman Gill (20) and Virat Kohli (17) offered some resistance, consistent pressure from the Australian pace attack, spearheaded by Mitchell Starc (3/38) and Scott Boland (2/34), kept India on the back foot.

A fighting 40 from Rishabh Pant, before he was finally dismissed by Boland, and a resilient 26 by Ravindra Jadeja, also dismissed by Starc, provided the only moments of respite for the tourists. However, the lower order failed to provide substantial support, leaving India with a challenging situation heading into day two. The late flurry of boundaries from Jasprit Bumrah (12*), however, provided a small glimmer of hope.

The match itself holds little bearing on the overall series result, as Australia already secured victory with a 2-1 lead. However, the contest remains crucial for India’s World Test Championship Final aspirations; a loss or draw will eliminate them from contention.

Changes to both teams saw Shubman Gill replace Rohit Sharma in India’s playing XI, while Jasprit Bumrah captained the side in the absence of the regular captain. Australia replaced Mitchell Marsh with Beau Webster.
