SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – Australia has made a significant change to its team for the final Test against India at the SCG, dropping struggling all-rounder Mitch Marsh and handing a debut to Tasmanian Beau Webster. The decision comes despite captain Pat Cummins confirming that star quick Mitchell Starc will play despite recent rib soreness.

Marsh, who has struggled with both bat and ball this series, has been omitted after managing only 13 overs in the last three Tests and scoring a paltry 9, 5, 4, 2, and 0 in his past five innings. While the team insists there are no fitness concerns for Marsh, his poor form ultimately led to his axing. Cummins stated that the team felt a “freshen up” was needed and praised Webster’s strong performances in domestic cricket.

Webster, a 31-year-old all-rounder, has an impressive first-class record since March 2022, averaging 57.1 runs and taking 81 wickets at 31.7. His inclusion provides Australia with valuable bowling versatility.

Starc, meanwhile, received the all-clear after scans for rib soreness sustained at the MCG. His inclusion, along with Cummins, Scott Boland, and Nathan Lyon, necessitated a greater bowling contingent prompting the selection of Webster.

This will be the second consecutive Test featuring a debutant for Australia, following Sam Konstas’ appearance in the Boxing Day Test. Cummins emphasized that Marsh understood and accepted the decision, even expressing excitement for Webster’s opportunity.

The final Test holds significant implications for both teams. An Australian victory or draw would see them reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since 2014-15. A win for India would extend their record to five consecutive series victories. A win for Australia would also secure their place in the World Test Championship final.
