Wed Jan 01 16:07:13 UTC 2025: ## Puducherry Welcomes 2025 with Peaceful Celebrations, but Two Fatal Accidents Mar Festivities
**Puducherry, January 1, 2025** – Puducherry ushered in the New Year with a mix of peaceful celebrations and tragedy. Thousands of residents and tourists flocked to the Promenade Beach on New Year’s Eve, enjoying the festivities under a heavy police presence. However, two fatal two-wheeler accidents marred the night, claiming the lives of Arul Pandian, 33, and Devaraj. Both accidents occurred as the riders were returning home after New Year’s celebrations, police reported. In addition to these fatalities, over 35 people sustained injuries in other two-wheeler accidents throughout the night.
Despite the accidents, the overall New Year’s Eve celebrations were peaceful. The absence of government-sponsored events on the Beach Road, due to national mourning for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, resulted in smaller crowds than in previous years. Over 2,000 police personnel and volunteers managed crowd control and traffic.
The pre-New Year’s period saw numerous entertainment events, including a concert by popular band Thaikkudam Bridge. New Year’s Day began with many devotees visiting temples and churches for prayers, including Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan who offered prayers at the Manakula Vinayagar temple.
