**DHAKA, BANGLADESH** – A surge in mob killings has plagued Bangladesh following the August 2024 revolution that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, according to three human rights organizations. Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), Manabadhikar Songskriti Foundation, and the Human Rights Support Society reported a significant increase in mob violence, with figures ranging from 128 to 173 deaths in 2024 – three times the average of the previous five years. The majority of these killings occurred after Hasina’s departure, with many targeting members of her Awami League party.
The reports highlight a rise in intolerance and radicalism, prompting calls for police intervention and an end to vigilantism. One widow, Beauty Ara, recounted the brutal mob killing of her husband, a former student leader within the Awami League, despite filing a police report.
Beyond mob violence, the organizations also documented a continued problem of extrajudicial killings, allegedly perpetrated by security forces. These findings prompted calls for a commission to investigate the human rights abuses committed during Hasina’s rule and to ensure justice for victims. The interim government has been urged to thoroughly investigate these disturbing allegations.
