Tue Dec 31 02:11:49 UTC 2024: ## Venezuelan Court Fines TikTok $10 Million Over Deadly Challenges
**Caracas, Venezuela** – Venezuela’s Supreme Court imposed a $10 million fine on TikTok on December 31st, 2024, citing the platform’s failure to prevent viral challenges that allegedly resulted in the deaths of three children. Judge Tania D’Amelio accused TikTok of negligence and gave the company eight days to pay the fine, further ordering the establishment of a Venezuelan office to oversee content compliance with local laws. The court did not detail how the fine would be enforced against the Chinese-owned company.
This action follows a series of incidents linked to TikTok challenges, including the November death of a 12-year-old girl who reportedly participated in a challenge involving tranquilizer pills. The deaths of a 14-year-old and a third child were also attributed to similar challenges. These events prompted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to publicly blame TikTok.
The ruling comes amidst a broader crackdown on online platforms in Venezuela. The government previously blocked X (formerly Twitter) for ten days in August following protests against Maduro’s re-election, accusing owner Elon Musk of orchestrating attacks against the country. Dozens of websites and media outlets have also been blocked in recent years for non-compliance with regulations or perceived opposition to the government. The ongoing restrictions raise concerns about freedom of speech and access to information in Venezuela. TikTok has yet to respond to requests for comment.
