Tue Dec 31 18:17:29 UTC 2024: ## Kozhikode New Year’s Eve Event Leads to Standoff Between Residents and Police

**Kozhikode, Kerala, December 31, 2024** – A New Year’s Eve event at the Calicut Trade Centre in Kozhikode resulted in a tense standoff between local residents and police on Tuesday evening. The event, titled “Road to Free Ground,” proceeded despite a stop memo issued by the Kozhikode Corporation citing numerous violations.

The Corporation had denied a Public Performance Licence (PPR) and issued the stop memo following complaints from residents. While the organizers, That Fortune Bucket Entertainment Private Ltd., sought a stay order from the Kerala High Court, permission was ultimately contingent upon fulfilling all statutory requirements, which were not met. The Corporation Secretary, K.U. Bini, further denied permission due to the building’s alleged unauthorized construction and the lack of a sanitation certificate, requesting police assistance to halt the event.

Despite this, the event went ahead, prompting a protest by local residents, organized under the Sarovaram Environment Protection Committee. The police, however, prevented the protesters from approaching the Trade Centre, leading to accusations that they failed to enforce the Corporation’s order. Kozhikode Corporation Councillor M.N. Praveen criticized the police for protecting those who violated the order.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding the Trade Centre and alleged encroachment of Kottooli wetlands. The Corporation previously issued a demolition notice and a fine of ₹98 lakh for unauthorized construction. The residents’ association continues its fight against the alleged encroachment and destruction of mangroves.
