**San Juan, Puerto Rico** – A massive power grid failure plunged nearly all of Puerto Rico into darkness on New Year’s Eve, leaving residents without electricity to ring in the new year. The outage, affecting approximately 87% of LUMA Energy’s customers by Tuesday afternoon, is expected to last 24 to 48 hours, according to the energy distribution company.
While LUMA attributes the outage to a failure in an underground line, the exact cause remains under investigation. Power generator Genera spokesperson Ivan Baez stated that the affected line, operated by LUMA, caused the shutdown of several of Genera’s plants and private generators. LUMA has not directly addressed responsibility for the power lines.
The widespread blackout disrupted New Year’s Eve celebrations and caused widespread frustration. Residents shared their anger and disappointment, with many pointing to the island’s long history of power outages and the dilapidated state of its infrastructure. Ramon Luis Nieves, a San Juan attorney and former senator, called the outage a “disaster more than a decade in the making,” citing years of underinvestment and aging equipment.
Governor Pedro Pierluisi urged LUMA and Genera to expedite the restoration of power and improve communication with the public. Incoming Governor Jenniffer González, who takes office Thursday, announced the formation of an energy task force to address the recurring blackouts, stating that the current energy system “fails our people so often.”
The outage underscores the ongoing challenges Puerto Rico faces with its power grid, a problem exacerbated by Hurricane Maria in 2017. Protests calling for the cancellation of LUMA’s contract have become increasingly common, reflecting the public’s dissatisfaction with the company’s performance. The situation highlights the vulnerability of the island’s infrastructure and the urgent need for significant investment and reform.
