Tue Dec 31 20:02:14 UTC 2024: ## Kochi’s New Year’s Eve Celebrations Proceed Peacefully Amidst Tight Security

**KOCHI, January 1, 2025** – Kochi and Fort Kochi successfully ushered in 2025 with largely peaceful New Year’s Eve celebrations, thanks to a robust security operation that prevented major incidents. Tens of thousands of revelers, both domestic and international, attended the festivities, a significant event for the heritage tourism hub.

Authorities implemented stringent security measures, including a heavy police presence (1000 officers), 400 CCTV cameras in Fort Kochi and Veli Ground, dedicated evacuation teams, and readily available ambulances, to avoid a repeat of past year-end stampedes. Traffic restrictions were also put in place, and ferry services to Fort Kochi were temporarily halted to manage the crowds. Kochi Metro extended its services to facilitate dispersal after the celebrations.

The traditional “Burning of Papanji” effigy, usually held at Parade Ground, was moved to Veli Ground due to a week-long mourning period following the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The Parade Ground displayed the steel frame of the planned effigy. The Cochin Carnival rally was postponed to January 2nd.

A joint operation involving police, Excise, and Narcotics Control Bureau personnel, assisted by sniffer dogs, resulted in five arrests, four registered cases, and the seizure of 165 gm of ganja. These preemptive measures helped maintain order and prevent drug-related incidents.

The successful management of the large crowds underscores the effectiveness of the coordinated efforts by the police, Motor Vehicles Department, district administration, and other agencies in ensuring a safe and smooth New Year’s celebration.
