Tue Dec 31 20:17:33 UTC 2024: ## Two Years After Kanjhawala Tragedy, Mother Seeks Justice, Grapples with Loss
**NEW DELHI, January 1, 2025** – Two years after the horrific Kanjhawala incident, where a 20-year-old woman, Anjali Singh, was dragged to death by a speeding car, her mother, Rekha Devi, continues her fight for justice. Six of the seven accused are out on bail, leaving Ms. Devi feeling abandoned by the system.
The trial, which began in July 2024, is currently focused on recording eyewitness statements. While a comprehensive 800-page chargesheet has been filed, Ms. Devi’s frustration is palpable. “All the accused, except one, are out on bail,” she stated, highlighting the agonizing slow pace of the legal process.
The incident, which occurred on January 1, 2023, shocked the nation. Anjali was struck by the car and dragged for over 12 kilometers. While the Delhi Police have since increased patrols in the area, the incident highlighted serious concerns about poorly lit roads and safety in the city.
Beyond the legal battle, Ms. Devi faces immense personal hardship. She is struggling financially, relying on a depleting ₹10 lakh compensation from the Delhi government, while battling her own health issues and raising three teenage children. Despite promises of educational support and employment, Ms. Devi reports receiving no further assistance from the government.
The family’s grief remains profound. Anjali was the sole breadwinner, and her absence has left an irreplaceable void. “We can never move on,” Ms. Devi said, her voice heavy with sorrow. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for January 8th.
