Tue Dec 31 17:10:09 UTC 2024: ## Historic Madras Boat Club to Host Prestigious Rowing Regatta
**Chennai, January 1, 2025** – The Madras Boat Club (MBC), a historic institution dating back to 1867, is gearing up to host the ARAE-FEARA Regatta from January 7th to 11th, 2025. This year marks the 81st edition of the prestigious rowing event, a testament to its enduring legacy.
The regatta, a collaboration between the Amateur Rowing Association of the East (ARAE) and the Far Eastern Amateur Rowing Association of Asia (FEARA), boasts a rich history. Initially a predominantly British affair, the event has evolved to embrace a diverse range of participants, reflecting India’s post-independence progress. The regatta’s traditions, including a welcoming arch of oars for the chief guest and a final “Easy Oars” call, continue to add to its charm. While the practice of tossing the winning coxswain into the river has been discontinued due to concerns about water quality, the event retains its unique character.
This year’s regatta features events for all ages, including Masters and Super Masters categories, showcasing the enduring athleticism of veteran rowers. The prestigious Hooghly and Adyar trophies will be contested, alongside others, such as the Willingdon Trophy, named after a former Viceroy of India who held numerous high-ranking positions within the British Empire.
The MBC, which has witnessed the deterioration of Chennai’s waterways over the years, continues its rowing activities on the Adyar River. The club’s perseverance serves as a stark contrast to the lack of action on river conservation. With the regatta’s high profile, it is hoped that the event will inspire renewed attention to the urgent need for improved river management in the city.
