Tue Dec 31 17:36:49 UTC 2024: ## Karnataka High Court Orders Audio Announcements at Bus Stops to Aid Disabled Commuters

**Bengaluru, December 31, 2024** – The Karnataka High Court has mandated the implementation of audio announcement systems (AAS) at major bus stops across the state within two years, a move welcomed by persons with disabilities (PWDs). The ruling comes in response to ongoing challenges faced by disabled commuters in navigating public transportation, particularly in Bengaluru.

Visually impaired individuals currently struggle to access information at bus stops due to the lack of audio announcements, often requiring assistance from others. Similarly, hearing-impaired individuals lack visual aids, and those with mobility issues face difficulties accessing and navigating bus stops due to poor infrastructure. Commuters report difficulties boarding and alighting buses, exacerbated by buses frequently parked away from designated stops, creating safety hazards and a lack of driver and conductor support.

While the government’s “Accessible India Campaign” has made some progress, with upgrades to 18 out of 47 sanctioned government buildings in Bengaluru, including ramps, handrails, and accessible toilets, much remains to be done. The campaign, costing ₹27.05 crore to date, has seen improvements at select BMTC bus stands, but widespread accessibility remains elusive.

The High Court’s order emphasizes the need for effective AAS implementation, including sufficient funding and maintenance. The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) currently has AAS in approximately 3,500 of its 6,000 buses, but acknowledges the need for further improvements in infrastructure, driver sensitization, and facility maintenance.

The order also directs KSRTC and BMTC to maintain and expand AAS in their fleets. Experts, while praising the court’s decision, stress the need for collaboration between transport corporations, local authorities, and the state government for effective implementation and the prioritization of accessible public spaces for the benefit of all citizens.
