OTTAWA, ON – The United States men’s national under-20 hockey team begins its quest to defend its World Junior Championship title today in Ottawa. The Americans, boasting a roster featuring 10 players from last year’s winning team, are stacked with NHL talent, including six first-round picks and a total of 22 players currently competing in college hockey. Their 25-player squad (14 forwards, 8 defensemen, 3 goaltenders) will face stiff competition in Group A alongside Canada, Finland, Germany, and Latvia. Group B includes Czechia, Kazakhstan, Slovakia, Sweden, and Switzerland.
Team USA opened the tournament with a decisive 10-4 victory over Germany, fueled by a four-point performance from James Hagens (2 goals, 2 assists) and a five-assist night from Cole Hutson. Hagens, a top prospect according to Central Scouting, is among several highly-rated players on the US roster, including linemates Ryan Leonard and Gabe Perreault. Other notable players to watch include defenseman Logan Hensler (USA), forwards Porter Martone and Victor Eklund (brother of San Jose Sharks’ William Eklund, playing for Sweden), and defenseman Matthew Schaeffer (Canada).
The tournament, running from December 26th to January 5th, will be televised on NHL Network in the United States and TSN in Canada. All eyes are on the Americans as they aim for a back-to-back championship win.
