**Chennai, December 27, 2024** – The Madras High Court on Friday questioned Chennai Police Commissioner A. Arun’s public declaration that only one individual was involved in the Anna University sexual assault case, deeming it premature given the ongoing investigation. A division bench, comprising Justices S.M. Subramaniam and V. Lakshminarayanan, heard two public interest litigations (PILs) demanding a CBI probe into the matter.
Justice Subramaniam expressed concern that the Commissioner’s press conference, held before the investigation concluded, could hinder a fair and thorough probe. The court questioned the lack of regulations governing press conferences by top police officials before investigations are complete. The judge commended the student for reporting the assault and urged other potential victims to come forward. He also criticized the public release of the FIR, revealing the accused’s identity.
The Advocate General, P.S. Raman, asserted that the accused was arrested within 24 hours and denied allegations that the accused was affiliated with the ruling DMK party. He promised a detailed status report, leading the court to adjourn the hearing until Saturday. A separate suo motu writ petition was referred to the Chief Justice for approval. The court emphasized the need for stringent action against perpetrators of sexual assault and the importance of protecting victims’ identities.
