**CHENNAI, December 28, 2024** – The ongoing Chennai Metro Rail Phase II project is causing significant disruptions to the annual Margazhi music season, impacting both attendees and performers. Road closures and diversions in areas like Mylapore, Alwarpet, Royapettah, and T. Nagar are making it difficult for music lovers to reach concert venues.
Residents and concert organizers report significant travel challenges. Radhika Chakravarthi of Adambakkam described the commute as “tough,” while C. R. Balaji of Mandaiveli stated that the congestion prevented him from attending concerts this year. The difficulties are particularly acute for those relying on public transport, with bus stops relocated and longer walking distances to venues.
Ranjini Kaushik, founder of SciArtsRUs, highlighted the impact on performers, citing instances of late arrivals due to traffic. Hamsadwani R. Sundar estimated a 10-15% reduction in audience numbers, attributing part of the decline to the construction and a post-pandemic shift towards online viewing.
Despite concerns, K. Kalyanasundaram of mdnd.in reported a significant increase in ticket sales after December 1st, exceeding last year’s figures by at least 20%. While some international attendees are reportedly absent this year, Issai Mazhalai Ramjhi noted that performing artists from abroad are present and attending concerts. The organizers expressed hope that the disruptions will be resolved before next year’s Margazhi season.
