**VISAKHAPATNAM, Andhra Pradesh (December 28, 2024)** – The passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has prompted a renewed focus on his significant contributions to the development of Visakhapatnam. Singh’s close ties with the city are being remembered through numerous initiatives he spearheaded during his tenure.
Among his key achievements in Visakhapatnam was the laying of the foundation stone for the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) expansion in 2006, increasing its capacity from 3 million to 6.3 million tonnes. That same day, he presented the PM’s trophy to the VSP for being the “Best Integrated Steel Plant.” He also played a crucial role in the expansion of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) in the city.
Further contributions included facilitating the merger of Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) with the Defence sector and Bharat Heavy Plate and Vessels Limited (BHPV) with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). Singh also announced plans for a new shipyard in Andhra Pradesh, inaugurated Gangavaram Port, and was instrumental in establishing the Naval Alternate Operating Base (NAOB) at Rambilli. In 2008, during the Indian Science Congress at Andhra University, he launched the INSPIRE scheme to attract scientific talent. Finally, in 2009, he launched the INS Arihant, a nuclear-powered submarine built at HSL.
Political leaders and citizens across Andhra Pradesh have expressed their condolences following Singh’s death, paying tribute to his legacy and impact on Visakhapatnam’s growth. Tributes included wreath-laying ceremonies and the garlanding of his portrait.
