**BENGALURU, INDIA (December 27, 2024)** – OpenAI, the artificial intelligence powerhouse behind the popular ChatGPT chatbot and the new Sora text-to-video generator, experienced a significant service disruption on December 26th. The outage, lasting several hours, impacted ChatGPT, Sora, and several APIs, causing frustration for users worldwide.

According to OpenAI, the issue began around 11:00 PST on December 26th with high error rates reported across its services. While the company swiftly addressed the problem, the outage reportedly lasted approximately three hours for ChatGPT and nearly four hours for Sora. Downdetector, a website tracking service outages, registered over 1,500 outage reports from India and over 2,300 from the U.S., with New York particularly affected.

The timing of the outage is noteworthy, coinciding with the recent launch of Sora for general use to subscribers and shortly before Google’s launch of its competing Veo 2 AI video generator. OpenAI has stated that they are conducting a full investigation into the cause of the outage and will publish a detailed report at a later date. As of late December 27th, OpenAI reported that all services are mostly back online.
