**New Delhi** – Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India and a towering figure in the Indian National Congress, passed away today at AIIMS hospital in Delhi. He had been battling heart ailments for several years and had undergone multiple bypass surgeries.

Dr. Singh, widely regarded as a master of economics, held numerous key positions throughout his career. He served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from 1982 to 1985. Prior to this, he was the Chief Economic Advisor from 1972 to 1976 and also headed the Planning Commission from 1985 to 1987. His contributions were recognized with the Padma Vibhushan award in 1987.

In 1991, he became Finance Minister under P.V. Narasimha Rao, implementing significant economic reforms that, while lauded by many, also drew criticism from opposition leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee. While he served several terms in the Rajya Sabha, a single unsuccessful attempt at contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Delhi marked his foray into direct electoral politics.

Later, he was nominated as Prime Minister by Sonia Gandhi, leading the nation through several economic crises. His legacy as an economist and statesman continues to be celebrated across India.
