Thu Dec 26 18:12:12 UTC 2024: ## Tamil Nadu Doctors Demand Salary Hike Matching AIIMS Standards

**Chennai, December 27, 2024** – The Legal Coordination Committee (LCC) for government doctors in Tamil Nadu has urged the National Medical Commission (NMC) to intervene and force the state government to implement its recommended salary increases. The LCC, headed by S. Perumal Pillai, argues that state government doctors’ salaries should be brought in line with those of doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), starting with a minimum salary of ₹56,100.

The committee’s demands also include stipends for trainee doctors and postgraduate medical students, salaries for medical educators, and time-bound promotions mirroring those offered to central government doctors. Dr. Perumal highlighted the critical role of public health infrastructure, emphasizing that salary increases should be viewed as an investment in this crucial sector. He noted the disparity between the state’s 70 medical colleges (37 government-run) and the relatively small number of government doctors—only 19,000—serving the population. The COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Perumal added, underscored the vital importance of adequately compensating and supporting public health professionals.
