**New Delhi, India** – Former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away Thursday evening at AIIMS Delhi at the age of 92 due to age-related health complications. The Union government has declared a seven-day period of national mourning in his honor. While schools and colleges remain open nationwide on Friday, December 27th, Karnataka and Telangana have announced public holidays to commemorate his life and legacy.
Dr. Singh, often hailed as the architect of India’s economic reforms, served two consecutive terms as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. He led the Congress party to victory over the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA in the 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha elections. He retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year after a 33-year tenure.
His last rites will be held on Saturday. The Congress party has cancelled all its programs for the next seven days, including its Foundation Day celebrations scheduled for December 28th.
