Thu Dec 26 08:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Phillies Add Veteran Pitcher Ross, While Top Prospect Painter Rehabs

**Philadelphia, PA** – The Philadelphia Phillies bolstered their pitching staff Monday with the signing of veteran right-hander Joe Ross to a one-year, $4 million contract. The 31-year-old joins the defending NL East champions after a season with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he posted a 3.77 ERA in 25 appearances. Ross, a first-round draft pick in 2011, brings a wealth of experience to the team, having pitched for both the Washington Nationals and Brewers throughout his seven-season career.

This signing is one of several smaller moves the Phillies have made this offseason, also including the acquisition of left-hander Jesús Luzardo and the signing of outfielder Max Kepler to a one-year, $10 million deal.

However, the team will proceed cautiously with prized pitching prospect Andrew Painter, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery. The 21-year-old, a top prospect who impressed in the Arizona Fall League after recovering from a 2023 injury, will not participate in spring training games. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski stated that Painter will gradually increase his workload in the minor leagues, with a potential major league debut slated for the summer.
