**Kozhikode, Kerala:** Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan offered his condolences to the family of acclaimed Malayalam writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair, who passed away recently. The Chief Minister visited Nair’s residence, Sitaram, in Kozhikode’s Kotaram Road, and expressed his grief to Nair’s wife, Kalamandalam Saraswati, and daughter, Ashwathy. Ministers A.K. Saseendran and P.A. Muhammed Riyas accompanied him.
In a Facebook post, the Chief Minister described Nair’s passing as an irreplaceable loss to Kerala and the Malayalam literary world. He lauded Nair’s contributions, stating that he elevated Malayalam literature to the pinnacle of world literature.
M.T. Vasudevan Nair, a multifaceted personality, was a celebrated short story writer, novelist, screenwriter, film director, editor, and cultural icon. His works, deeply rooted in the Valluvanad region’s culture, resonated with Malayalees and gained international recognition. His novels, including *Naluukettu* and *Randamoozham*, are considered classics. His screenplays and films also garnered national and international acclaim, showcasing his diverse talents. He was a recipient of prestigious awards including the Jnanpith Award and the Padma Bhushan.
Nair’s literary contributions spanned over seven decades, creating a body of work accessible to both common readers and intellectuals alike. He served as editor for Mathrubhumi publications, president of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, and held other key positions in various literary organizations. His commitment to secularism was also highlighted, with his works often demonstrating empathy across religious boundaries and promoting human unity.
