**KOZHIKODE, KERALA –** Acclaimed Indian writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair, renowned for his contributions to Malayalam literature and cinema, passed away on December 25, 2024, at a private hospital in Kozhikode, Kerala. He was 91.

Nair, popularly known as M.T., was a prolific author whose works spanned novels, short stories, and screenplays. His writing career began with a prize-winning short story, “Valarthumrigangal,” while still a college student. His novel *Asuravithu* is considered by some critics to be among the finest in Malayalam literature. He achieved widespread recognition for his ability to reflect the socio-political landscape of Kerala through his storytelling.

Throughout his illustrious career, Nair received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Jnanpith Award (1995), the Kerala government’s Ezhuthachan Award (2011), and the Padma Bhushan (2005). He also held honorary Doctor of Letters degrees from the University of Calicut and Mahatma Gandhi University. His works frequently won literary awards, including the Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel *Kalam* (1970).

Beyond his literary achievements, Nair was a highly influential figure in Malayalam cinema. Though initially reluctant, he became a sought-after screenwriter, crafting scripts for cinematic classics such as *Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha*, *Amrutham Gamaya*, and *Pazhassi Raja*. He also served as the editor of *Mathrubhumi Magazine*, mentoring numerous young writers.
