**New Delhi, India –** Former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi on Thursday evening in critical condition, sources confirmed. The 92-year-old was admitted to the emergency department around 8 pm.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited AIIMS to check on Singh’s health. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expressed his concern and wished Singh a speedy recovery on social media.
Singh, India’s only Sikh Prime Minister, served from 2004 to 2014. His distinguished career also included a long tenure in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India’s parliament, where he served for 33 years before retiring earlier this year. His political career spanned decades, starting with his appointment as Finance Minister in 1991. He was a vocal critic of the 2016 demonetisation policy, famously calling it “organised loot and legalised plunder.”
Before entering politics, Singh held several key positions in India’s economic and academic spheres, including Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and positions within the Planning Commission and the Finance Ministry. He also held prominent roles in international organizations like the UNCTAD Secretariat and the South Commission. A renowned economist, Singh earned degrees from Panjab University, Cambridge University, and Oxford University.
