Wed Dec 25 16:42:45 UTC 2024: ## Former Suriname Dictator Desi Bouterse Dies at 79
**PARAMARIBO, SURINAME (December 25, 2024)** — Desi Bouterse, the former dictator of Suriname and convicted murderer of political opponents, died Tuesday at the age of 79, the government announced. Bouterse, who remained popular among some segments of the population, rose to power through a 1980 coup. He stepped down in 1987 under international pressure following accusations of orchestrating political violence, only to return to power after a second, bloodless coup in 1990. He later served as president from 2010 to 2020.
His death, following a short illness, was confirmed by his doctor, Rabindernath Khoenkhoen, at 6:50 am Tuesday. Rumors of his passing circulated earlier in the day. His body was transferred to his residence in Paramaribo where family and supporters of the National Democratic Party (NDP), of which he was honorary chairman, gathered.
Bouterse’s conviction in December 2023 for the 1982 execution of 15 individuals, including journalists and military personnel, was upheld, resulting in a 20-year prison sentence. He had refused to surrender to serve his time, urging his supporters to remain calm until the 2025 elections.
President Chan Santokhi expressed condolences and called for peace and calm amidst the news. The NDP issued a statement praising Bouterse’s leadership and contributions to the country.
