Tue Dec 24 02:59:55 UTC 2024: ## Gruesome Subway Murder Rocks New York City

**New York, NY –** A horrific murder has shaken New York City, leaving residents reeling. Sebastian Zapeta, a 33-year-old Guatemalan citizen who had previously been deported from the U.S. in 2018, has been arrested and charged with murder and arson for allegedly setting a woman on fire on a subway train.

The incident occurred Sunday morning, December 22nd, at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn. Surveillance footage shows Zapeta approaching the victim, who appeared to be sleeping, and igniting her clothing. The woman’s clothes were engulfed in flames within seconds, and she died at the scene. Zapeta reportedly watched from a nearby bench as the fire consumed her, before police and a transit worker intervened.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the act as “one of the most depraved crimes one person could possibly commit against another human being.” Zapeta was apprehended later that day after high school students recognized him from police-released images and tipped off authorities. He was found on the same subway line.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez stated that his office is committed to bringing Zapeta to justice for this “gruesome and senseless act of violence.” The victim’s identity has not yet been released.

The incident has renewed concerns about safety on the New York City subway system. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has recently implemented increased security measures, including deploying National Guard members to conduct random bag searches and funding the installation of cameras in every subway car. Officials credit these cameras with assisting in the swift apprehension of Zapeta.

The investigation into Zapeta’s re-entry into the U.S. following his deportation is ongoing. It is unclear if he has legal representation or when he will be arraigned. A Brooklyn address linked to Zapeta matches a Samaritan Daytop Village service center, which provides housing and substance abuse support.
