**Kolkata, India –** Junior doctors in Kolkata staged a heated protest on Tuesday, accusing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of dragging its feet on the investigation into the rape and murder of a fellow doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The doctors, who symbolically locked the gates of the CBI’s Salt Lake office, clashed with police when security personnel removed the lock.
The protest, marked by anger and frustration, saw doctors accusing the CBI of colluding with Kolkata Police to protect the perpetrators. One doctor stated, “We are losing hope in the CBI’s handling of the investigation. If this continues, it would be better if they shut down their office in Kolkata.” Another added, “Even after so many days, our sister ‘Abhaya’ has not received justice. The CBI detectives are working with Kolkata Police to protect the perpetrators.”
Simultaneously, a larger protest, organized by the Abhaya Mancha and the Joint Platform of Doctors, continued at Dorina Crossing in central Kolkata. The demonstration, which included a candlelight vigil (“Droher Alo Jalan”) and a human chain, drew significant public support. Organizers announced plans to extend the protests until December 31st, pending court approval.
The protests follow a Calcutta High Court ruling on Monday upholding the right of doctors to demonstrate. The state had challenged an earlier order permitting protests near Dorina Crossing.
The CBI has filed charges against Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, for the rape and murder of the doctor, who was found dead inside the hospital on August 9th. The chargesheet alleges Roy committed the crime while the victim was resting. Despite the chargesheet, the ongoing protests highlight the doctors’ profound dissatisfaction with the pace and direction of the investigation.
