Tue Dec 24 16:55:26 UTC 2024: ## Iran Lifts Ban on WhatsApp After Two Years

**Tehran, Iran –** Iran’s Supreme Council of Cyberspace voted unanimously on December 24, 2024, to lift the two-year-old ban on WhatsApp, state media reported. The decision, announced by Communications Minister Sattar Hashemi on X, follows years of restrictions on the messaging app and other foreign platforms. While the effective date remains unclear, the move has sparked debate within Iran.

Supporters, including presidential advisor Ali Rabiei, argue the restrictions were costly and ineffective, generating only anger and hardship. Vice President Mohammad Javad Zarif echoed this sentiment, stating that experts deem the bans detrimental to national security. President Masoud Pezeshkian, who campaigned on easing internet restrictions, is a key proponent of the lifting of the ban.

However, opponents, such as 136 members of parliament, voiced concerns, arguing that unrestricted access would benefit Iran’s enemies. They proposed allowing access only to platforms adhering to Islamic values and Iranian laws. This highlights the ongoing tension between the desire for greater internet freedom and concerns about national security and cultural preservation.

The ban on WhatsApp, along with Google Play, followed nationwide protests in 2022 triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini. Other platforms, including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube, remain blocked. While Iran has developed domestic alternatives, many citizens have relied on VPNs to bypass restrictions. The lifting of the WhatsApp ban marks a significant shift in Iran’s internet policies, though the long-term implications remain to be seen.
