**Maputo, Mozambique –** At least 21 people, including two police officers, have died in widespread violence and looting across Mozambique following the confirmation of Daniel Chapo as the president. The unrest, which began Monday after the Constitutional Council upheld Chapo’s victory in the October 9th elections, saw protesters, largely young supporters of losing candidate Venancio Mondlane, engaging in widespread destruction.
Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda reported 236 acts of violence, resulting in 21 deaths and 25 vehicles set ablaze. Eleven police subunits and a prison were attacked, with 86 inmates freed. The violence affected major cities including Maputo and Beira.
Mondlane, who garnered 24% of the vote compared to Chapo’s 65%, has called for a nationwide shutdown starting Friday. However, violence has already escalated significantly, leaving the capital tense. The death toll from post-election violence now exceeds 150. The situation remains highly volatile.
