**Chennai, December 24, 2024** – The Tamil Nadu School Education Department has allocated ₹6.23 crore (approximately $7.5 million USD) to fund the undergraduate education of government school students attending prestigious higher education institutions across India and abroad.

This initiative, announced by School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi in June, covers tuition fees for students from classes 6 to 12 who gain admission to top institutions, including IIT-Madras, NITs, NLUs, and central universities. The program also provides travel allowances for students receiving scholarships to study abroad. An annual allocation of ₹6 crore is earmarked for this purpose.

The expenditure reflects a significant increase in the number of students benefiting from the scheme. In 2022-23, 18 students received funding totaling ₹13,41,609. This rose to 74 students costing ₹97,67,751 in 2023-24, and a substantial 333 students in 2024-25 at a cost of ₹5,11,98,808. Two students also received fully funded scholarships from the Taiwanese government.
