Sun Dec 22 16:45:17 UTC 2024: ## Putin Vows Retaliation After Drone Attack on Kazan

**Moscow, December 23, 2024** – Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed to escalate the conflict in Ukraine, promising significantly greater destruction in response to a drone attack on the city of Kazan. The attack, which occurred on December 22nd, targeted a luxury apartment building, though no casualties were reported. Videos circulating on social media showed drones striking the building, causing fires.

Russia blamed Ukraine for the attack, which is approximately 1,000 km from the Ukrainian border. While Ukraine has yet to comment, Putin issued a televised threat during a government meeting, stating that those who seek to harm Russia will face far greater consequences. This is the latest escalation in the nearly three-year conflict, following a series of aerial attacks on both sides.

Putin’s threat echoes previous warnings, including a threat to strike Kyiv with hypersonic missiles. The Russian Defense Ministry has also framed recent strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure as retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian military targets using Western-supplied weapons.

Meanwhile, Russia claims to have made further advances in eastern Ukraine, reporting the capture of the villages of Lozova and Krasnoye (Sontsivka in Ukraine). The latter is near Kurakhove, a key resource hub that Russia is attempting to encircle as part of its efforts to fully seize the Donetsk region. Moscow’s intensified offensive in recent months aims to maximize territorial gains before the incoming U.S. President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January. Trump has pledged to end the conflict swiftly, though without outlining a peace plan. Russia claims to have taken over 190 Ukrainian settlements this year.

Separately, Ukraine accused Russian forces of killing captured Ukrainian soldiers, alleging a war crime. A video purportedly showing the execution of surrendering soldiers has been released, although its authenticity remains unverified. This is one of several similar allegations made by Ukraine throughout the conflict.
