Mon Dec 23 16:43:10 UTC 2024: ## Philippines to Acquire US Typhon Missile System, Sparking China’s Ire

**Manila, Philippines –** The Philippines announced plans Monday to acquire the US Typhon missile system to bolster its defense capabilities in the South China Sea, prompting a sharp rebuke from China. The decision follows the deployment of the system earlier this year for joint military exercises and its subsequent retention in the northern Philippines, a move already criticized by Beijing.

Philippine Army chief Lieutenant-General Roy Galido stated that the acquisition is justified by the system’s effectiveness in the archipelago’s defense strategy. He emphasized the system’s importance in protecting Philippine sovereignty, although the exact cost remains undetermined.

China swiftly condemned the move, with Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning calling it “provocative and dangerous,” warning of a potential regional arms race. She urged the Philippines to reverse its decision, arguing the region needs peace, not escalating military tensions.

The Typhon system, developed by Lockheed Martin, boasts a range of 300 miles (480 kilometers), enabling the Philippine army to project force up to 200 nautical miles (370 kilometers), aligning with the country’s maritime entitlements. General Galido clarified that the system is intended to protect Philippine naval assets and will not be used for offensive operations beyond the country’s maritime boundaries.

While the acquisition process is expected to take at least two years, the move marks a significant escalation in defense cooperation between the Philippines and the US, reflecting growing tensions with China over the disputed South China Sea. The decision comes despite previous warnings from Chinese officials about the destabilizing impact of the Typhon deployment. General Galido dismissed these concerns, emphasizing the Philippines’ commitment to protecting its national interests.
