**COIMBATORE, December 24, 2024** – Construction of a new central prison in Bilichi village near Karamadai is set to begin, following an inspection by Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police (DGP) Shailesh Kumar Yadav. The ₹327.33 crore project, sanctioned by the state government, will occupy a 95-acre site. A tender has been floated for the first phase of construction.
In a separate operation, police seized ₹2.25 crore in cash and 1,900 banned lottery tickets during a raid targeting illegal lottery sales. The raid, part of a larger operation across Coimbatore and Tirupur districts, resulted in the arrest of S. Nagaraj, a cashier at a lottery shop. Police reported that a significant portion of the seized cash was in ₹2,000 denomination notes and that Nagaraj had previous offenses related to illegal lottery sales. The operation involved eight police teams conducting searches at 30 locations.
