Tue Dec 24 15:43:36 UTC 2024: ## Kochi Fails to Mark 500th Death Anniversary of Vasco da Gama
**KOCHI, INDIA (December 24, 2024)** – The 500th death anniversary of Vasco da Gama passed largely unnoticed in Kochi, India, where the famed Portuguese explorer is buried. While grand commemorations are reportedly underway in Lisbon, Portugal, where Da Gama’s remains were moved in 1539, Kochi held only a single painting competition.
Former Kochi Mayor K.J. Sohan criticized the lack of official recognition, lamenting the general lack of historical awareness and the failure of authorities to organize a significant event. Mr. Sohan highlighted Da Gama’s pivotal role in discovering the sea route to India and the subsequent impact on global trade. He noted that past anniversaries had included more substantial commemorations, such as wreath-laying ceremonies.
Sources within the District Tourism Promotion Council stated that the anniversary was not included in their annual calendar and that no requests were received to organize a commemorative function. They indicated that future events might be considered if a demand arises. Da Gama’s tomb remains within St. Francis Church in Fort Kochi.
