**Chennai, December 23, 2024** – R. Srinivasan, a Chennai-based sweet maker known as “Kamarkat Srini,” has found a novel way to reduce waste and create sustainable products. Using coconut shells leftover from his traditional candy-making business, he’s crafted a thriving enterprise, SN Crafts, producing elegant spoons and ladles.
Srinivasan’s journey began with an appreciation for the entire coconut, leading him to repurpose the shells typically discarded after making his signature Kamarkat candy. Partnering with his father-in-law, a skilled carpenter, and business partner Nagarajan Mani, he developed custom machinery to efficiently carve the shells into functional and attractive kitchenware. The handles are crafted from teak and pine wood.
The business sources organic coconuts from farmers in Coimbatore and Tirupur, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and ethical sourcing. The production process is streamlined, allowing for the creation of up to 300 ladles in a single eight-hour workday when materials are readily available from Chennai markets like Parrys and Moore Market.
However, Srinivasan’s success highlights the challenges faced by other businesses attempting similar sustainable initiatives. Former collaborator Nagarajan Rao, who previously collected coconut shells for recycling, explained difficulties in scaling up due to practical issues like pest control, storage, and a lack of processing facilities in Chennai. Despite these hurdles, Rao remains hopeful about the future of coconut-based sustainability projects.
