**DAMASCUS, Syria** – Jordan has pledged its support for the reconstruction of Syria following the recent overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad, as regional powers rush to engage with the new administration led by Ahmed al-Sharaa. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, during talks with al-Sharaa in Damascus on Monday, stated Jordan’s commitment to helping its neighbor rebuild and achieve stability.
“We stand by our Syrian brothers as they start the rebuilding process,” Safadi told Al Jazeera, emphasizing Jordan’s desire for a “stable, secure, safe Syria” that respects the rights of its people. Safadi also highlighted the importance of securing the 375km border between the two countries, addressing concerns about drug and weapons smuggling, particularly the amphetamine Captagon. He condemned recent Israeli attacks on Syria, calling for Israel’s withdrawal from Syrian territory in accordance with the 1974 agreement.
This visit follows similar high-profile diplomatic missions, including one from Turkey’s foreign minister who also pledged support for the political transition and reconstruction. Qatar has also reopened its embassy in Damascus after 13 years and sent a delegation to meet with Syrian officials. These moves reflect a broader regional shift towards engagement with the new Syrian leadership.
Al Jazeera’s Hashem Ahelbarra, reporting from Damascus, noted that al-Sharaa is actively seeking international recognition, having recently met with diplomats from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the United States. The US, while engaging, has reportedly expressed expectations that Syria will sever ties with Iran.
While neighboring countries express optimism about the potential for stability, Iran has reaffirmed its support for Syria’s sovereignty, emphasizing the need to prevent Syria from becoming a haven for terrorism. The influx of regional and international delegations underscores the significance of the power shift in Syria and the subsequent efforts to shape its future. Jordan, which hosts a large number of Syrian refugees, has a vested interest in a stable and secure Syria. The extent of Jordan’s involvement in the reconstruction process remains to be seen, but the visit signifies a key step in the evolving regional dynamics.
