Mon Dec 23 14:26:54 UTC 2024: ## Bangladesh Seeks Extradition of Ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India

**New Delhi/Dhaka** – The Bangladesh government has formally requested India’s extradition of Sheikh Hasina, the ousted prime minister, to face trial on charges of crimes against humanity and genocide. The request, delivered via a diplomatic note verbale, comes amidst a wave of violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh following Hasina’s removal from power on August 5th.

Bangladesh’s de facto Foreign Minister, Touhid Hossain, confirmed the extradition request, stating that Dhaka wants Hasina returned for judicial proceedings. The Bangladesh Home Adviser, Jahangir Alam, further clarified that the request was sent under an existing extradition treaty between the two countries. The Indian government has acknowledged receipt of the request but offered no immediate comment.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in Bangladesh has issued arrest warrants for Hasina, along with numerous former ministers, advisors, and officials. Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, head of Bangladesh’s interim government, previously announced the intention to seek Hasina’s extradition.

Meanwhile, concerns are mounting over the escalating violence against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh since Hasina’s departure. Radharaman Das, Vice President of ISKCON Kolkata, highlighted reports of over 2,200 cases of violence, including attacks on Hindu temples, prompting warnings for the Christian community ahead of Christmas. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has expressed serious concern to the Bangladeshi government and continues to monitor the situation closely. The Indian government has stated that it is closely following the situation and has conveyed its concerns to the Bangladeshi authorities regarding the safety of minorities.
