Sun Dec 22 05:00:00 UTC 2024: **Texas Launches Billboard Campaign in Mexico and Central America to Deter Illegal Immigration**

AUSTIN, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott today announced a new billboard campaign in Mexico and Central America aimed at dissuading migrants from attempting dangerous illegal crossings into Texas. The campaign, launched alongside Operation Lone Star, features graphic depictions of the dangers faced by migrants, including human trafficking and sexual assault.

Over 40 billboards have been erected in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico, utilizing Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, and Russian translations to reach a wide audience. The billboards highlight the legal and physical consequences of illegal entry, emphasizing the high risk of sexual violence perpetrated by smugglers.

Governor Abbott held a press conference at Wall Ranch in Eagle Pass, Texas, near a burned-down “rape tree”—a location where migrants have been assaulted and their clothing left as trophies. He was joined by ranchers Kimberly and Martin Wall, who described the terrifying impact of these crimes on their lives and community. Rose Luna, CEO of the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault, underscored the widespread sexual assault crisis affecting migrant women and children.

The Governor emphasized the campaign’s goal is to prevent the dangerous journey from even beginning, stating that until stronger federal border security measures are in place, Texas will continue taking steps to protect its borders. The press conference included Texas Department of Public Safety Director Freeman Martin, Adjutant General of Texas Major General Thomas Suelzer, and Texas Border Czar Mike Banks. The full billboard campaign and press conference are available online.
