KUWAIT CITY – Prime Minister Narendra Modi made history Saturday as the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Kuwait in 43 years, attending the opening ceremony of the 26th Arabian Gulf Cup as Guest of Honour. Invited by Kuwaiti Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, PM Modi joined the Amir, Crown Prince, and Kuwaiti Prime Minister for the event.
The biennial football tournament, hosted by Kuwait and featuring eight nations including GCC countries, Iraq, and Yemen, is a major sporting event in the region. PM Modi, in a social media post, lauded the event as a celebration of football’s spirit and expressed his gratitude to the Amir for the invitation. He conveyed his best wishes to all participating teams.
PM Modi’s two-day visit included a warm welcome upon arrival, a meeting with Kuwait’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence and Interior, and an address to the Indian diaspora at a “Hala Modi” event. In his address, he highlighted India’s growing global influence, citing its position as the world’s fifth-largest economy and a leader in fintech and startup ecosystems.
