Fri Dec 20 16:48:12 UTC 2024: ## Andhra Pradesh Leverages Weather Forecasts to Minimize Cyclone Damage

**Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh – December 20, 2024** – The Andhra Pradesh government credited the India Meteorological Department (IMD) with significantly reducing loss of life during recent heavy rainfall events. Revenue Special Chief Secretary R.P. Sisodia highlighted the effectiveness of IMD’s advanced weather predictions at a workshop commemorating the IMD’s 150th anniversary.

The workshop, held at the School of Planning and Architecture in Vijayawada, brought together stakeholders from various government departments and agencies. Mr. Sisodia emphasized the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and the need for proactive mitigation strategies. He underscored the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges like deforestation and pollution, which contribute to these disasters.

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra traced the IMD’s progress, noting a significant improvement in disaster preparedness. He cited the contrast between the 1864 Machilipatnam cyclone, which claimed 40,000 lives, and the 2023 Michaung cyclone, where no lives were lost. He praised Andhra Pradesh for its effective use of technology and communication in disseminating weather information.

The IMD is now providing not just short-term weather forecasts, but also impact predictions up to five days in advance, allowing governments to implement effective preventative measures. An MoU was signed between the IMD and the School of Planning and Architecture to collaborate on research and disaster management strategies. The workshop featured presentations from various stakeholders, including the AP State Disaster Management Authority and representatives from the Departments of Fisheries, Agriculture, and Irrigation.
