**Bengaluru, India –** A heated political row has erupted in Karnataka following the arrest of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), CT Ravi. Ravi was arrested Thursday on charges of using derogatory language against Congress Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar during a session of the Legislative Council.
The arrest stems from an FIR filed by Hebbalkar, who alleges Ravi repeatedly used a sexually offensive term against her. The charges against Ravi are filed under sections 75 (sexual harassment) and 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The incident reportedly followed a heated exchange between BJP and Congress members, with allegations that some BJP members made derogatory comments about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. While it remains unclear whether Ravi himself made comments about Gandhi, Congress MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah stated that Ravi directed the offensive language towards Hebbalkar after the house was adjourned.
Ravi denies the charges and claims the case is politically motivated, alleging a conspiracy to harm him. He further criticized the police for allowing a BJP meeting at the police station where he was being held.
Minister Hebbalkar confirmed the incident, expressing shock and pain at the language used. She received support from her family, constituency, and the Congress party. While the Legislative Council Chairman ordered a review of audio and video recordings, official sources stated that recording had ceased when the incident occurred due to the adjournment of the House.
The arrest comes amidst an already tense political climate in the state, highlighting the escalating tensions between the BJP and Congress. The incident has sparked outrage and further fueled the ongoing political battle between the two parties.
