Sat Dec 21 09:56:47 UTC 2024: ## Residents of Chennai’s Secretariat Colony Demand Action Against Late-Night Drinking and Drug Use

**Chennai, December 21, 2024** – Residents of 9th Street in Secretariat Colony, near Ayanavaram, are demanding increased police presence and CCTV cameras to address escalating issues of late-night drinking, littering, and drug use. Residents report that groups of people congregate on the poorly lit street, consuming alcohol and creating disturbances until midnight. Abandoned buildings and a nearby Tasmac liquor shop are allegedly contributing to the problem.

Residents claim that complaints to the G5 police station have yielded minimal results, with offenders returning after police patrols depart. One resident reported being threatened by drinkers, while another described being chased with a knife after confronting a group. The use of ganja in the area is also a concern.

Sub-Inspector Mohamed Jaffer of the G5 police station acknowledged the complaints and stated that police patrol the area from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and will respond to calls for assistance. He confirmed that those caught drinking in public or using ganja will be arrested and prosecuted under relevant laws. However, he stated that installing CCTV cameras, a request from residents, is currently not feasible due to budget constraints. Residents remain concerned about their safety and call for immediate action to address the ongoing issues.
