**Madurai, Tamil Nadu, December 20, 2024** – Farmers in Madurai district protested crop failure at a grievance meeting on Friday, demanding compensation from the government. The meeting, chaired by Collector M.S. Sangeetha, saw farmers from Paravai, Samayanallur, and Keelakuyilkudi present damaged crops as evidence.
Farmers attributed the low yields to the unexpected effects of weedicide, claiming it damaged their crops. Officials suggested that factors such as insufficient rainfall, sunlight, and excessive weedicide application might have contributed to the issue. The Collector assured the farmers that a team of experts would investigate the matter, and a report would be submitted to the government for appropriate action.
Beyond crop losses, farmers also raised concerns about loan repayments and the need for more direct purchase centers in the district. Collector Sangeetha instructed officials to respond to all submitted petitions.
