Sat Dec 21 11:40:12 UTC 2024: ## Delhi Police Transfers Rahul Gandhi Assault Case to Crime Branch Amidst Congress Outrage

**New Delhi:** Delhi Police have transferred the First Information Report (FIR) against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to the Crime Branch’s Interstate Cell. The FIR, filed based on a BJP complaint alleging assault following a scuffle in Parliament, involves charges of voluntarily causing grievous hurt, criminal force, and criminal intimidation. The transfer comes a day after the initial FIR was registered at the Parliament Street police station.

The Crime Branch will also investigate a separate complaint filed by the Congress, accusing BJP MPs of assaulting Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Police plan to seek permission to inspect the Parliament premises as part of the investigation.

The incident, which occurred during the final days of Parliament’s winter session, has escalated into a major political showdown. Congress vehemently criticized the BJP for allegedly disrupting Parliament proceedings and preventing Opposition members from entering. They demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, citing an allegedly offensive remark about Babasaheb Ambedkar, and called for the release of CCTV footage of the scuffle.

Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi and Pramod Tiwari accused the BJP of unprecedented obstruction of Parliament, claiming it’s the first time the ruling party prevented the smooth functioning of the House. They also questioned why the Congress complaint wasn’t acted upon as promptly as the BJP’s.

The BJP, meanwhile, accused Gandhi of circulating an edited version of Shah’s speech to incite public sentiment, submitting a breach of privilege notice against Gandhi and Kharge. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed the notice, stating that it was based on the alleged misrepresentation of Shah’s speech. The matter now lies with the Speaker and Chairman of the respective Houses.
