Fri Dec 20 19:38:03 UTC 2024: **Delhi BJP Shortlists Candidates for Assembly Elections**

NEW DELHI (The Hindu) – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has begun the process of selecting its candidates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections in February 2025. A senior party leader revealed that three to four candidates have been shortlisted for each of the 70 constituencies from a pool of over 700 names. This follows a screening committee meeting chaired by Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva.

In contrast, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has already announced its full slate of candidates, while the Congress has declared 21.

BJP MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri stated that the party believes only a “double-engine government” (BJP in both Delhi and at the Centre) can transform Delhi into a world-class city. He criticized the AAP government for blaming the Centre for development delays, emphasizing the BJP’s commitment to development in Delhi. Bidhuri assured voters that the BJP would not discontinue AAP’s existing subsidy programs, such as free electricity, water, and bus rides for women, but would focus on improving the quality of these services. He questioned the efficacy of free services if the infrastructure or implementation is lacking.

The AAP has countered, alleging that a BJP victory would lead to the termination of these subsidies. The BJP last governed Delhi from 1993 to 1998.
