**Gurugram, Haryana:** Veteran politician and former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala passed away on Friday at the age of 89. He suffered a heart attack at his Gurugram residence and was rushed to Medanta Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His sons, Ajay and Abhay Chautala, and grandson, former Deputy CM Dushyant Chautala, were among those present at the hospital.

Chautala’s body was taken to his farmhouse in Sirsa’s Teja Khedda village. A public viewing will be held from 8 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, followed by a state funeral at 3 PM. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar are expected to attend the funeral.

The Haryana government has declared three days of state mourning from December 21st to 23rd, with schools to be closed on December 21st. A planned thank-you rally in Uklana on December 22nd has been postponed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, and other prominent political figures expressed their condolences.

Chautala, the eldest son of former Deputy Prime Minister Chaudhary Devi Lal, served five terms as Haryana’s Chief Minister, although his tenures ranged from a mere five days to several years. His political career was marked by both significant electoral victories and periods of intense political turmoil and violence. He also notably completed his 10th and 12th-grade education while in Tihar jail in 2021. His death marks the end of an era in Haryana’s political landscape.
