Fri Dec 20 05:55:30 UTC 2024: ## Russia Launches Missile Attack in Kharkiv; Ukraine Strikes Rostov; Finland Warns of Lingering Russian Threat

**Kharkiv, Ukraine/Moscow, Russia – December 20, 2024** – A new wave of violence marked the 1030th day of the Russia-Ukraine war today. A Russian missile strike in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region resulted in three fatalities and three injuries, along with damage to over ten houses, according to Ukrainian national police.

In a retaliatory action, the Russian defense ministry claimed that Ukraine launched six US-made ATACMS missiles and four UK-made Storm Shadow missiles at the Rostov region in southern Russia. Moscow asserted that it successfully intercepted all the ATACMS missiles and three of the four Storm Shadow missiles, vowing a response to the attack. The Ukrainian government has not yet commented on these claims.

Meanwhile, the Moscow court ordered a two-month pre-trial detention for the suspect in the assassination of top Russian General Igor Kirillov. The suspect, an Uzbek national, faces terrorism charges.

Adding to the geopolitical tensions, Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen issued a stark warning, stating that Russia and its allies will continue to pose a significant threat to Europe even after the conclusion of the Ukraine war. This warning comes amid strained relations between Finland and Russia, with their shared border currently closed due to accusations of Russian-sponsored undocumented migration into Europe.
