Wed Dec 18 10:40:51 UTC 2024: ## Indiana Executes Man After 15-Year Hiatus, Sparking Death Penalty Debate

**Michigan City, IN –** Joseph Corcoran, 49, was executed by lethal injection at the Indiana State Prison early Wednesday, marking Indiana’s first state execution in 15 years. Corcoran was convicted in 1997 for the murders of his brother and three other men. His execution, the 24th in the U.S. this year, followed years of legal battles and appeals, including a last-minute plea to the U.S. Supreme Court that was ultimately denied.

Corcoran’s attorneys argued he suffered from severe mental illness, impacting his competency for execution. Despite these claims, and a lack of a hearing to assess his competency, the courts refused to halt the proceedings. Governor Eric Holcomb, who had the authority to commute the sentence, did not intervene.

The execution reignited the debate surrounding the death penalty in Indiana. Opponents held a vigil outside the prison, protesting the state’s resumption of executions after a hiatus caused by a national shortage of lethal injection drugs. The state’s use of compounding pharmacies to obtain these drugs is a point of contention for critics, who argue that the methods used may cause unnecessary pain.

Indiana’s last state execution occurred in 2009; however, federal officials carried out 13 executions at a federal prison in Indiana between 2020 and 2021. The state’s execution policy has been subject to repeated legal challenges and ethical concerns related to the availability and use of lethal injection drugs. The lack of media access to the execution also drew criticism, as Indiana is one of only two states prohibiting media witnesses.
