**Mountain View, CA –** Google has announced further layoffs, impacting 10% of its managerial staff, as part of its ongoing efficiency push. CEO Sundar Pichai revealed the cuts, affecting manager, director, and vice president roles, during an all-hands meeting on Wednesday.
A Google spokesperson clarified that some affected employees will transition to individual contributor roles, while others represent complete role eliminations. This is the fourth round of layoffs this year, following previous cuts to its global advertising team (a few hundred jobs in January), its cloud unit (100 jobs in June), and the massive 12,000-employee reduction (6.4% of its global workforce) in January 2023.
The latest cuts come amidst intense competition in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. Rivals like OpenAI’s advancements pose a threat to Google Search, a significant revenue generator for the company (over 57% of revenue last year). Google’s response includes the recent launch of Gemini 2.0, its most advanced AI model to date, which has been well-received by investors, sending Google’s stock soaring.
Pichai also addressed the need for a cultural transformation within Google, indicating a redefinition of “Googleyness,” the company’s often amorphous term for its desired employee characteristics. The ongoing efficiency drive, initiated in September 2022, aims to double its initial efficiency gains.
