**Jaipur, Rajasthan –** A horrific collision involving a gas tanker and multiple vehicles on the Jaipur-Ajmer highway Friday morning resulted in a devastating fire that claimed eight lives and injured at least 40 others. The incident, which occurred in the Bhankrota area, turned a section of the highway into an inferno, with flames visible for nearly a kilometer.
CCTV footage captured the moment the gas tanker collided with other vehicles, immediately igniting a massive blaze that rapidly spread to nearby structures, including at least one residence. The ensuing fire caused significant damage, charring at least 30 vehicles and leaving a trail of destruction along a 300-meter stretch of the highway. A subsequent explosion further fueled the inferno.
Thick black smoke filled the air, creating hazardous conditions and causing significant traffic disruption. Emergency responders, including ambulances and fire crews, rushed to the scene, battling the blaze and transporting the injured to SMS Hospital in Jaipur. A “green corridor” was established to expedite the transfer of critically injured patients.
Authorities are currently working to identify the passengers of a bus involved in the accident. The extent of the damage to businesses and properties along the highway is still being assessed. Over 40 injured individuals are receiving treatment at SMS Hospital, with approximately half reportedly in critical condition, according to Rajasthan Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma also visited the hospital to oversee the response efforts. The investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
