NEW DELHI – Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is facing a new FIR filed by Delhi Police following a scuffle in Parliament on Thursday. The FIR, filed based on complaints from two BJP MPs who allege assault and incitement by Gandhi, includes charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), though the initially included charge of attempt to murder was later dropped. The incident occurred amidst heightened tensions over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s comments on B.R. Ambedkar.
While BJP MPs Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput sustained injuries, Gandhi denies the allegations, claiming BJP members obstructed his entry into Parliament. Rajput’s injuries are reported to be serious.
The Congress party dismissed the FIR as a “diversionary tactic” aimed at deflecting attention from Gandhi’s strong protest against Shah’s comments. Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal described the case as a “badge of honour,” highlighting that Gandhi already faces 26 other FIRs, which he attributes to “BJP’s vendetta politics.” Venugopal also criticized Delhi Police for acting on BJP complaints while allegedly ignoring similar complaints from Congress women MPs.
